Celebrating 60 Years of Patra: A Final Chapter in a Remarkable Journey

Sleep well to improve health

For almost six decades, Patra has been more than a brand — it has been a family, a heritage, and a shared love for natural fabrics, craftsmanship, and timeless style. As we prepare to close this chapter, we want to honour our story, celebrate the people who shaped it, and reflect with gratitude on every step of this extraordinary journey.

Where It All Began: A Love for Silk

Patra’s story began in 1965, when Urmila Patra turned her passion for Silk into a small family business. At a time when affordable luxury was rare, she filled that gap with colour, comfort, and exceptional craftsmanship.

What started with a handful of shot Silk Scarves from India quickly grew into something much bigger. Those first scarves sold out instantly, paving the way for velvet dresses that vanished in days, hand-embroidered blouses that drew overwhelming demand, and iconic styles featured in The Observer — all while staying true to pure fabrics and natural fibres.

Why We Always Chose Pure Fibres

Long before sustainability became a common conversation, Patra trusted in natural materials and the gifts of the earth — fibres that breathe, soften with time, and endure. Silk for its delicate, blissful touch and natural temperature regulation, Bamboo for softness and breathability, Cotton for ease and durability, Wool and Cashmere for warmth and elegance, and linen for relaxed sophistication. Each fabric was chosen not simply for its beauty, but because it was cherished and because it allowed us to create clothing with a lighter impact on the planet. At Patra, slow, mindful fashion has always been at the heart of what we do, respecting both people and the environment.

Innovation with Integrity

Patra was among the earliest UK retailers to introduce Silk Thermals, a collection beloved by outdoor adventurers, sports teams, and travellers around the world.

Patra Silk UK DesignOver the years, the brand expanded into a full lifestyle collection. We introduced clothing and accessories for women, men and children, along with homeware such as bedding, towels and skincare accessories.

With each decade, Patra evolved, but its heart stayed the same. Honest craftsmanship, beautiful materials and uplifting colours remained central to every collection. All pieces were designed in London, reflecting the timeless style associated with British fashion.

From Sports and Expeditionsto Film and Royal Engagements: Patra in the Spotlight

Patra clothing has accompanied remarkable people on equally remarkable journeys.

Our thermals and other garments have been worn on expeditions around the world. They’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with the Red Rubber Ball Foundation and trekked Everest with the British Exploring Society. They were also part of the 2018 Great Outdoor (TGO) Challenge in Scotland with The Backpackers Club.

Patra has supported many sports over the years, including horse riding, golf and scuba diving. We have proudly sponsored teams such as the North Dorset Sub Aqua Club, as well as British Superbike rider Sam West  in the European eGrandPrix.

Beyond sport, our Silk Thermals and elegant dresses have appeared on screen and in public life.

Rachel Weisz wore our thermals in Disobedience (2017), Anne Reid appeared in Patra dresses throughout the BBC series The Sixth Commandment, and Princess Anne has been spotted in our designs during official engagements.

We take pride in being a London-based British brand whose designs have been embraced by adventurers, celebrities, and members of the Royal Family alike. It has been a privilege to see our clothing cherished and tested across the world.

The People Behind Patra

Patra has always been a family business, not only by name but in spirit. Our London team grew into a multicultural, creative, and dedicated group who shaped the heartbeat of our brand. We are endlessly grateful to everyone who joined us along the way.

A Bond with Our Customers

Some of you have been with us since the early catalogue days. Others discovered us through Silk Thermals, a favourite dress, or a cherished scarf passed down from mother to daughter. Your stories became part of ours, your loyalty kept us inspired, and your trust allowed us to keep creating and improving.

What Will Always Remain

Even as Patra closes its doors, the values that shaped it will endure.

We have always been guided by a love for pure, natural fabrics and a deep respect for craftsmanship and detail. Slow, mindful fashion has shaped every decision we made.

Comfort, beauty, authenticity and sustainability define our work, together with a strong commitment to British design. These values remain at the heart of everything we do.
