What is Jersey fabric and why is it a must-have?

What is Jersey fabric?

What is Jersey Fabric:

Jersey fabric is a type of knit fabric known for its comfort and stretchiness, primarily used in clothing. Unlike traditional woven fabrics, jersey is knitted using continuous loops of yarn, resulting in its distinctive texture and drape.

Production Process:

Jersey fabric can be made from various fibres including cotton, wool, silk, and bamboo. The production process used to make Jersey fabric varies significantly depending on the types of fibres it contains. Regardless of the fibre used, the manufacturing process involves loading yarn onto automated knitting machines. These machines twists and combines yarn to create the distinctive, close-knit structure of jersey fabric, creating a latticework appearance with twisted vertical yarns connected by untwisted horizontal yarns.

In some cases, yarn intended for manufacture into jersey garments is dyed prior to the knitting process, and in other scenarios, textile manufacturers dye fabric once it is finished. Depending on the material used, textile manufacturers may also apply flame retardants or other finishing treatments to improve the appearance or durability of jersey fabric.

Characteristics of Jersey Fabric:

– Stretchiness and flexibility: Ideal for garments requiring movement.

– Softness and smoothness: Gentle against the skin for comfort.

– Breathability: Allows air circulation, keeping you cool and dry.

– Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of garments from undergarments to outerwear.

– Easy-care: Machine-washable and requires minimal ironing.

Uses of Jersey Fabric:

The fabric’s breathability, versatility, and ability to hold its shape makes it a favoured option for both casual and comfortable garments from t-shirts, tops, dresses, skirts, leggings, and loungewear to babywear, underwear and sleepwear. Of course, jersey is also a popular choice for activewear.

Types of Jersey Fabric:

Fabrics made of jersey knit might be light, medium-weight, or heavy. There are quite a few different distinct types of jersey fabric:

– Single or standard jersey: It’s made using one set of needles and appears smooth on one side and piled on the other.

– Double or interlock jersey: It’s composed by two pieces of single knit jersey knit together to create a smooth surface on both sides. In comparison to the single jersey, the resulting fabric is thicker, stronger, and has a smooth surface.

– Jacquard jersey: Features intricate patterns knitted into the fabric. Special stitches are used to create Jacquard designs (patterns, relief, etc.) that are knitted in the cloth, not printed. Jacquard jersey fabric has less stretch than other types of jersey, but has a fantastic drape, as well as detailed working. You can use yarn in a single colour or a variety of colours.

– Clocqué jersey: Double fabric with a jacquard effect, often blended with silk or wool.

– Stretch jersey: Includes elastane for enhanced stretch and recovery, suitable for sportswear.

– Slub or slouchy jersey: Textured pattern due to irregular slub yarn.
